How to start game programming in flash

November 14th, 2012

Learning to program in a new language or learning to program at all can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be, it can be lots of fun with the proper resources. If you are new to programming I suggest first checking out the lynda.com tutorial series Actionscript 3 in Flash CS3 professional essential training. It is a video tutorial series that I initially learned from and is loaded with valuable information. Next I would suggest picking up a good book, I’ve personally read most of the actionscript books out there and I must suggest Essential Actionscript 3.0 as it is the best book I’ve come across.

After that I would suggest checking out as many game programming tutorials as you can get your hands on. After that I suggest making anything you are capable of making. Experience is the best training, make whatever you can even if its just an animation and upload it to websites such as newgrounds.com, kongregate.com and mochigames.com and get feedback from their users. While you improve in skill you will pick up everything you need to make great games.

I hope your excited to start your actionscript 3 journey, to get you started here is some video tutorials:

Monetizing your Games!

November 5th, 2012

There are many ways to monetize your games these days.

The first method would be to use APIs in your games such as, the Newgrounds API, Kongregate API, or MochiAds API. These work by adding ads to your flash game.

Another method of monetizing your games is to get a sponsorship, you can find a sponsor through FGL or by submitting your game to websites like Armor Games. This method is much more profitable if your game is quality enough to get a sponsor.

Another method is to post your game on a web site displaying an Adsense ad on it.

You can also display a preview video of your game on YouTube and monetize that with Adsense.

There are also often game programming competitions around the internet that could fetch you a decent prize!

I personally only use the Newgrounds API, and as of 5000 impressions I am at about $5, not very impressive, but then again I haven’t gotten a hit game yet!
